Overview
The Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Festival is an event held annually in May to commemorate the autonomous reform movement of peasants who rose up against the unjust tyranny of the feudal system during the Joseon Dynasty. The Donghak Peasant Revolution is considered a historical event that served as the starting point for Korea's modernization and had a significant impact on the national independence movement. This revolution began with the Gobu Peasant Uprising led by Jeon Bong-jun on January 10, 1894, and spread nationwide after the peasant army achieved its first victory at the Battle of Hwangtojae. In particular, the memorial festival has been held annually, centered around May 11, the day of the victory at the Battle of Hwangtojae. The Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Festival has established itself as a venue for reflecting on historical significance through various programs and cultural events that any citizen can freely participate in, and for inheriting and developing the values of autonomy and equality pursued by the Donghak Peasant Army in a modern context. Through this, it aims to connect the spirit of the past with the present era and develop into a meaningful festival that everyone can empathize with and participate in together.
