Overview
Held at the Jongmyo Jeongjeon Hall, which holds 500 years of history, this event features solemn ritual music and Ilmu (line dance) amidst the sublime resonance of a UNESCO-recognized World Heritage site. Jongmyo Daeje is a ritual ceremony held to enshrine the spirit tablets of the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty. Restored in 1969, it has continued to this day. As a comprehensive ritual combining the dignified ceremonies, dance, and music of the royal court, its cultural value was recognized when it was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2001. Since 2006, it has been held as an international event inviting domestic and foreign guests, drawing attention from people all over the world. Every first Sunday of May, it is a special opportunity to witness Jongmyo Daeje, where the dignified rituals, music, and dance of the Joseon royal court come together.
