Overview
‘Myohyeonrye’ is a ritual in the Joseon Dynasty where a newlywed queen or crown princess pays respects at Jongmyo Shrine, where the spirit tablets of past kings and queens are enshrined. It is a special historical event that offers a glimpse into the lives and status of royal women, as it is the only state ritual of the Joseon Dynasty in which women participated at Jongmyo. The 2026 ‘Jongmyo Myohyeonrye’ consists of the original musical ‘Myohyeon, Record of the Queen,’ based on the Myohyeonrye, and the royal costume experience event ‘Become a Crown Prince or Crown Princess and Take a Photo.’ The original musical ‘Myohyeon, Record of the Queen’ is a reconstruction of the Myohyeonrye of Queen Inwon, the third queen of King Sukjong, in 1703 (the 29th year of King Sukjong's reign). It tells the story of the conflict between state etiquette and personal emotions, as well as the poignant story of her father, Kim Ju-shin, who could no longer treat his daughter as he once did after she ascended to the position of queen.
