Overview
Seonnongdaeje is a representative traditional cultural festival in Dongdaemun-gu that modernly recreates the 'Seonnongje,' a traditional ritual held to pray for a bountiful harvest by offering sacrifices to Shennong and Houji, the gods of agriculture. It inherits the historical value of a state ritual where the King of the Joseon Dynasty would personally pray for a good harvest, perform the 'Chingyeongrye' (a ritual plowing ceremony) with the people, and look after the welfare of the public. The event is held at Seonnongdan in Jegi-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, and features the traditional ritual ceremony and a reenactment of the royal procession as its main attractions. In particular, to honor the origin of Seolleongtang—which is said to have been bestowed upon the people by the King after the ritual—a tasting event is held where Seolleongtang is prepared in large cauldrons and shared with visitors. Now in its 47th year, this event goes beyond a simple historical reenactment and has established itself as a cultural venue where local residents and tourists can connect.
