Overview
Designated as National Scenic Site No. 9, the Jindo Miracle Sea Road is a phenomenon where the sea between Hoedong-ri, Gogun-myeon and Modo-ri, Uisin-myeon, spanning approximately 2km, reveals a path 30-40m wide due to the ebb and flow of the tide between February and March of the lunar calendar. The mystery of this occurrence is truly extraordinary. Every year during the festival, countless domestic and international tourists visit Jindo to enjoy this miraculous moment for about an hour while the sea road is fully revealed. During the Jindo Miracle Sea Road Festival, Jindo-gun showcases the brilliant intangible heritage of Jindo, including Jindo Arirang, Ganggangsullae, Namdo Deulnorae, Jindo Ssitgimgut, Jindo Dasiraegi, Jindo Manga, and Jindo Buknori, providing a wealth of sights and entertainment to boost the excitement of tourists. The Jindo Miracle Sea Road connecting Hoedong and Modo became world-famous in 1975 when Pierre Landy, the French ambassador to South Korea, visited to see the Jindo dog (Natural Monument No. 53), witnessed the strange sea road phenomenon, and introduced it in a French newspaper as a modern-day miracle of Moses. In 1996, popular Japanese singer Yoshimi Tendo sang 'Jindo Story (珍島物語)', a song themed around the Jindo Miracle Sea Road, which became a hit and has attracted many Japanese tourists every year.
