Overview
The Yeondeunghoe (Lantern Lighting Festival) features a lantern parade from Dongdaemun History & Culture Park to Jogyesa Temple, as well as a traditional culture fair, Eoullim Madang (Lantern Dharma Ceremony), and Hoehyang Madang (Grand Closing Ceremony). With a long history spanning over 1,200 years, the festival has been passed down as a living cultural heritage and was designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in April 2012 in recognition of its value. In December 2020, it was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognized globally for its values of voluntary community spirit, intergenerational transmission through individual creativity, and the participation, consideration, and equality of diverse people.
